In the story when Wiglaf returns the gold that he retrieved from the dragons tower, Beowulf gives credit to God rather than Wiglaf. Beowulf gives credit to God a lot in the story.

I believe that Beowulf credits God for the retrieval of treasure. He thanks God for letting him have this opportunity to make his people rich by taking the dragon's gold. The truth is, God probably didn't have much to do with that, because it was Wiglaf who had to go into dragon's lair to get his treasure.
