Who were patrons of artists and scientists in the renaissance?

Patrons were usually royalty, aristocrats, or clergymen. Artists would typically be commissioned by these rich and influential people to create works of art or portraits. The same would be done with scientists, often by the Church, usually to publish findings that support Church-sponsored theories.
