The robotic rover Curiosity has instruments that detect radiation both inside the spacecraft and in the Mars environment. What is most likely the purpose of this radiation detection?

There are a couple of reasons for the Radiation Assessment Detector which are:

1. to monitor naturally occurring radiation that can be harmful if absorbed by living organisms;

2. to assess conditions are favorable for life and for preserving evidence about life;

3. it will also aid design of human missions by reducing the uncertainty about how much shielding from radiation future astronauts will require.

I hope this helps.
