A drum is round because it that specific shape helps keep the resonance within the instrument. The round walls help with the echoing the vibration. The corners of a square will only dim down the sound of the beat. Also, it's much better for the drum skin. The edges of a square drum would easily rip through the skin whereas a round drum would be able to distribute the force of a drumstick beating on it.
