Rutherford discovered that there was a positively charged central core to the atom and called it the nucleus. He said that the atom was mostly empty space. he discovered this using his gold foil experiment where he shot particles at gold foil and noticed that most of them went straight through while some reflected off of it. Rutherford's theory of atoms helped as he did concluded that their central core was positively charged (nucleus). He said that was empty spaced. He concluded this by doing using his foil experiment where he shot particles at gold foil where some of it went through it and some of it bounced back.
