Why did arab nationalists fight for the british in world war i? they were promised an independent arab homeland?

They fought for the British because the Ottomans were working together with Germans and Austria-Hungary. They knew that if they helped the British beat the Ottomans, that the Ottoman empire would break up and that they could have their own independent countries separate from the Ottoman empire.
