What is the basic unit for length

The meter. Since the metric system uses prefixes to change what the word "meter" truly means, the meter is the basic unit for length. For example, changing meter to "decimeter" you make it a tenth of a meter. I would also tell you the basic unit for length in the imperial system, but there isn't one.
