Some northern states used personal liberty laws to nullify the Fugitive Slave Act, written to help the South.

For the slave's freedom laws were denied considerably more so now crossing the northern outskirt doesn't set you free you must be liberated now by getting away to Canada and some northern states utilized individual freedom laws to invalidate the criminal slave act, written to help the south.
