How much must teachers really know about a students home and family background?

They know a little bit, but just enough to make sure that no one is in danger.

Well, since family background influences student achievement. Making sure that everything is OK at home is good. The teacher should know that the student isn't in danger at home. Or nothing to jeopardize their success rate and future.
