What is the slope of a line that passes through the points (1,3)(5,-1)

The slope of that line is -1. To find this you do the change of the y coordinates, or do -1-3, over the change of the x coordinates, or 5-1. You then get -4/4, which reduces to -1.

slope = (3 + 1)/(1 - 5) = 4/-4 = -1
