Common descent is a scientific theory that explains that all living organisms on earth are descendants of a common (single) ancestor. When two species share a recent common ancestor, they are said to be closely related. The theory is basically generated from the physical observation of several phenotypes of species (such as colour, structure, size, embryological development) and using molecular genetics methods.
