Unnecessary details only hurt the unity of your essay. These details make the writing off topic and disjointed. They keep the reader from being able to follow the flow of the essay and keep the essay from reading as a unified piece. Topic sentences are important to each paragraph but they help the essay's organization and flow more than the unity.
