A halyard 16ft long is cut into two pieces. If the L is the length of one piece, express the length of the second piece in terms of the length of the first piece.

Let L = the length of the first piece.
16 - L is the length of the second piece.

Together the 2 pieces must add to 16.
CHECK: L + 16 - L = 16
