A theory is an explanation of facts and observations defined by a set of concepts and ideas that organize phenomena.
A theory is something that hasn't yet been proven, but there is enough evidence so that it can be scientifically believed. It is different than a hypothesis, which is just someone's idea, and a rule, which is an established and proven theory.
