In order for liquid particles to become and or turn into gas particles, they most likely must overcome the attractive forces, usually hydrogen bonding and other London forces and or dipole dipole interactions depending if it is Nonpolar or polar, and gain energy, as it there is a change in energy and takes work for this phase change to occur.
