Why don't we have musical scores from the early Christian period? How was music passed on??

I think there were no notes or musical scores in the passed because the music was passed down by singing. Common folks would often perform the same songs on specific ceremony or celebration. Children were taught by their forefathers and continue to practice the pieces and passed it down to their next generation.
