What was one reason that a noble might see himself as nearly the king’s equal?

Nobles are also considered servants of the king, they gathered the charges for the crown where they lived, they ran nearby governmental issues, courts and so forth all with the authorization of the Lord in spite of the fact that were genuinely allowed to do however they wanted some idea they were over their station and tested the crown and laws and until the Magna Carta the ruler was "exempt from the laws that apply to everyone else"
