Combine like terms on each side of the equation...
8x+1=7x+22 subtract 1 from both sides
8x=7x+21 subtract 7x from both sides
x=21

Move unknown terms to the left of the equal with changed sign and the known terms to the right of the equal with changed sign.
3x + 5x - 7x = 7 + 15 - 1
x = 21
