How did Muslims demonstrate religious tolerance to Jews and Christians?

The Muslims were namely tolerable towards Jews and Christians alike by allowing them to serve within their own government but, they did make it so that in order to live in Mecca, you would have to pay a special tax if you were not Muslim.

They allowed them to live in Mecca for an increased tax if you weren't Muslim.
