A company uses two vans to transport workers from a free parking lot to the workplace between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. One van has 6 more seats than the other. The smaller van makes two trips every morning while the longer one makes only one trip. Two vans can transport 57 people, maximum.

I guess they are asking the capacity of each van. If so,
then x₁ be the number of seats in Van₁ and x₂ in Van₂
V₁ =1 trip, and V₂ =2 trips, so
x₁ +2x₂ =57 (for 1 Trip in V₁ and 2 Trips in V₂)

But we know that x₁ =x₂ + 6 (given)

Hence (x₂ + 6 ) + 2x₂ =57 , 3x₂ = 51 and x₂ = 17 and x₁ = 17+6 = 23
