The Sun produces energy by fusing atoms together to produce heavier elements. When the Sun is relatively young, it is mainly hydrogen being fused into heavier helium atoms. In heavy stars, sodium can be produced by fusing a Neon atom with a proton. It is therefore fusion that can be used to produce sodium within stars.
