After the resignation of President Richard Nixon, Ford took affice as the new President in 1974, and in his role, he used his power to pardon Nixon for the crimes he may have committed during his tenure as President. Nixon had been accused of being involved in the Water Scandal in 1972 so that hehad problems with the American justice.
