The term that is usually used to describe a certain geological phenomenon wherein structures are formed from the top of a cave down under is known as the stalagtite formation. In contrary with the stalagmite, a stalactite is a rock formation wherein most have resemblance with an "icicle."

Stalactite is the term that is used to refer to the formation that grows downward from the top of the cave. These formations are found in the ceilings of caves, hot springs, mines and man-made bridges. Any soluble material solidifies and can be used to form such formations.
