What is the purpose of the witches scenes in Macbeth?

While Banquo doesn't believe in the witches and their prophesies, Macbeth is attracted by them as shown in the second visit in Act IV to seek for their help. They, in this manner, play a role directing the way of the argument or plot because they tell Macbeth's actions as king.
