Sea-floor spreading occurs on the Mid-Ocean Ridge at a long divergent plate boundary. Convection currents push new rock from the mantle to the surface, pushing older rock out of the way. This pushes the rock further and further. The oldest rock, is, therefore, located by the North American and African continental shelves.
