President Andrew Johnson was impeached for ignoring the Tenure of Office Act. Johnson ignored this act by firing a member of the presidential cabinet without Congressional approval. Johnson was charged with violating this federal law when he became president and fired Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Even though he went through the impeachment process, he ended up not being removed from the presidency.
