Why did President Nixon believe in a balance of power between the world's most powerful nations?

If these nations were about equal in strength, they would balance one another and none could become dominant enough to threaten the others.

I believe it's because he didn't want any nation to become too powerful and overthrow the others. That's just my guess. hope it helps out
