As far as I remember the U.S was allied with South Korea, and other European and capitalist countries and they opposed The Soviet Union, North Korean and communist countries.

The United States and the Soviet Union were two superior superpowers during this time period. Vietnam eventually became a divided nation because of this rivalry. The United States gained the South, and the Soviet gained control over the North. The United States was working with the South republic instead of its enemy, the Northern communism Soviet state. I hope this helped somewhat!
