Why was Vicksburg the key to the Union's Anaconda Plan?

ႊThe anaconda plan was to surround and smother the South, cutting off supplies and exports. Taking Vicksburg would cut off Mississippi River traffic from New Orleans and the Gulf and stop food and arms shipments going North and cotton shipments South.
