The correct answer is 1862. He was appointed as the commanding officer of the Confederate army in 1862 and kept that position until his surrender in 1865. This wasn't his death, however, and he died five years later, in 1870, after having a stroke and getting a pneumonia. His legacy remains and he is still popular even in the North against whom he fought.
