The correct answer should be since January 1, 1863, which is 154 years. That is the date when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that stated that from that day on, all slaves in rebellious states are considered to be free. Of course, that didn't stop racism, but from that date on they were free men and legal slavery was abolished.
