Why was birth of a nation so controversial?

The depiction of the black characters as being sex crazed sociopaths with almost no regard for human life or decency. The film celebrates the ku klux clan and the advent of white supremacy. It puts forth the idea that the united states was founded and established on purely racist ideals and that the only true americans are the Aryans.
