How do geologists use sediment cores? (site 2)?

They have discovered that the ocean floors are relatively young. Rocks that are older than Cretaceous are very difficult to find throughout the world’s oceans. It led to the confirmation of the patterns produced by plate tectonics.

A sediment core is a material from the sea bed, usually in cylindrical in form is used by geologists to peek something on the past. It serves as a window for the geologist to study events from the past. Geologists do this by looking at the varied layers of the core sample.
