The Union had to make a plan to fight the Confederate states. The Union Army came up with a precise plan to do. That plan included the naval blockade of Southern ports. They named the “Anaconda plan”. The Union prevented any help for the Confederated states from abroad. The other strategies were capture Richmond, control of the Mississippi River, and capture two key locations for the Confederates, the city of Atlanta and Savannah.
