A direct democracy allows the people of a country to directly influence the nations choices.  While a representative democracy is a country lead my officials that are elected by the people, to represent the people.  In a direct democracy everyone has a say in the countries affairs so your side will always be represented, but in representative democracies the leaders can make choices that the people who elected them may not agree with causing their side not to be represented at all.
