A fish is 75 metres below sea level. A bird is directly above the fish and 887 metres above sea level. Find the vertical distance between the fish and the bird.

So, first you square both 75 and 887
75 x 75 = 5625
887 x 887 = 786769
After, add them
5625 + 786769 = 792394
Now find the square root of the sum.
Just write the square root sign over 792394.
Hope this helps! :)

Well if the fish is directly below the bird then there distance forms a straight vertical line. so to find the vertical distance you can add the 75 meters below sea level and the 887 meters above and get 962
