Castro allowed the Soviet Union, an ally, to place nuclear weapons in Cuba, only 90 miles off the coast of Florida. For the next 13 days, the USSR and the U.S. engaged in a nuclear standoff. The Soviet Union eventually removed the missiles in exchange for the U.S. removing its missiles from Turkey.
