Is the passage of dialogue written correctly or incorrectly?

"Do you want to come to my house this afternoon to practice our skit together?" Marie asked.
"That's a great idea," Belle answered, "and we can make plans for this Saturday, also."

I believe this passage of dialogue is written incorrectly. It should say

"Do you want to come to my house this afternoon to practice our skit together?" Marie asked.
"That's a great idea," Belle answered. "We can make plans for this Saturday, also."

Belle should start a new sentence, and thus there should be a period after "answered". Hope this helps!
