The candidacy of George Wallace furtjer erode the democratic "solid south" because Wallace won votes from southern opponents of the civil rights movement.

George Corley Wallace Jr. was the 45th Governor of Alabama. Wallace was regarded to as "the most dangerous racist in America" and was strongly against desegregation and supported the policies of "Jim Crow" during the Civil Rights Movement, claimin in his 1963 inaugural address that he stood for "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.
