How can good inferences be made about fossils?

Answer:

Some clues are the imprint in the material it was on, the texture, and the scars of the shell.

Using other animals as a reference and using some of the related species bones to try to fix the skeleton if some bones are missing.

With fossils, scientists can use carbon dating to determine the approximate age of whatever fossil they have.
