Why weren't time zones created until the late 1800's?

Until long-distance communication developed, there really was no need to coordinate your local time with that of the next town, let alone with another continent.

Time zones weren't created until the late 1800's because each town had it's own way of telling time. It was also unnecessary to have time zones because there really is not point in them if you don't have a strong way of communicating with people outside of town.
