Before being elected president of the United States in 1860, Abraham Lincoln worked as a boatman, store clerk, surveyor, militia soldier, and became a lawyer in Illinois, serving in the United States House of Representatives from Illinois in 1846.

In addition, Lincoln is the only U.S. president to have been awarded a patent for an invention, which consisted of a set of bellows attached to the hull of a ship just below the water line.
