What sort of chemical hazard is thalidomide?

Thalidomide is used as a sleeping pill which was deemed to be safe for even pregnant women in its initial manufacture. However, it caused birth defects in several babies and even caused death of the fetus.  Today, it is not advised to be taken by women who are pregnant.
