Why did so many cities grow along major rivers

So they could harvest crops and get water from the rivers. hope this helps!

So many cities as well as early civilizations grew along major rivers because when the river flooded, it created very fertile soil, which helped grow crops. It was also used as their main water source, although they had to boil the water so that they wouldn't get sick.
