The Portuguese dominion of the Spice Islands, began with the conquest, by Afonso de Albuquerque, of the city of Malacca. In fact, Albuquerque was only the leader of the expedition, sending his men to the secret Spice Islands. To concretize their conquests in the region, the Portuguese built the Fort of St. John the Baptist of Ternate.
