Why does a comet's speed increase as it approaches the sun?

it gets faster because the strength of the gravity increases

dont quote me on this, but im pretty sure it is because since the comet is closer, the gravitational pull is stronger, and the combination of all the forces working against/alongside the comet help it travel faster.
