John Adams put into law the alien and sedition acts to make it harder for immigrants to vote because he knew they would not vote for him. Many republicans fought to nullify these acts so they could have power in government but they were never put into power they were repealed meaning everyone's states rights once again became equal as people got ready for the election of 1800.
