Coal because the railroads allowed for easier transport throughout the states since most coal mines were found in the west.

I believe the answer is: c. Coal

As a result of rail road expansion, we discovered that coal can be used as one of the most cost efficient source of energy at that time. Combined with us not knowing the environmental effect that created after using coal, it became one of the major industries in united states during that period of time.
