-Shakespeare created a smaller role for Mercutio in the play than exists in the source material.

"Mercutio is the kinsman of the Prince and close friend with Romeo. He loves to fight and have fun. During Act 1/ Act 2, Mercutio is pretty much Romeo's crutch. When Romeo is depressed about Rosaline, Mercutio and Benvolio take his to the Capulet's party to "find him a new lady". That is where he ends up meeting Juliet. He gets killed by Tybalt (under Romeo's arm) and Tybalt flees the scene. Before he dies, he curses misfortune upon both the Capulet and Montague Houses. This foreshadows fate of the two lovers.
