Two skaters are racing toward the finish line of a race. The first skater has a 40 meters lead and is traveling at a rate of 12 meters per second. The second skater traveling at a rate of 14 meters per second. How long will it take for the second skater to pass the first skater?

distance between two skaters=40
difference in speed=2 m/sec

time=distance/time
=40/2
20 seconds

12x+40=14x
40=2x
x=20

it will take 20 seconds for the second skater to pass the first skater.
